What’s the most amazing way and place for spending your Spring holidays? Join us on this unique drawing & painting tour, led by artist Nicky Sanderson, which takes us from Edinburgh all the way to Lewis & Harris in the Outer Hebrides (and back)! The artistic focus is on capturing the colours of Spring with pencil, ink and water colours as the island comes to life.

The Outer Hebrides, also known as the Western Isles, offer an irresistible mix of breathtaking scenery, along with a rich and vibrant culture. The island is famous for its vast stretches of paradise beaches with white sand and turquoise water, but also for ancient history and monuments. Dramatic coastal scenes, abandoned crofts, standing stones, lochs, mountain landscapes and much more compete for the artist’s attention.

What you can expect

This 6 day (5 night) art tour has a focus on capturing the spring colours in inks, watercolours and acrylics. Led by our tutor Nicky Sanderson, the tour starts and finishes in Edinburgh as the the beautiful drives up to Ullapool and back, and also the ferry sailings to and from Stornoway, are parts of the experience you wouldn’t want to miss. The tour combines travelling with your pencils and paints with some indoor studio work to develop paintings and sketches further.

To make best use of the daylight, we leave Edinburgh early in the morning on day 1 to make our way up North. If you require accommodation in Edinburgh before and/or after the trip we can help you arrange this.

Here are some of the highlights of this tour:

  • The famous Callanish Stones, of course
  • Butt of Lewis, the most northern point with the famous lighthouse
  • Gearrannan blackhouse village and Carloway Broch
  • The beaches of Luskentyre, Seilebost and Scarista
  • The South Lochs area in Lewis teaming with wildlife from otters to osprey, whales and sharks
  • Rodel and its 15th century St Clement’s Church.

The course is suitable for all levels of ability and experience. A discount is available for non-painting accompanying guests. The tour involves some walking, some of it could be on rough paths. Please bring comfortable shoes and warm, waterproof clothing.

The Harris Hotel in Tarbert has been family owned and run for over 100 years.  Built in 1865 by the 7th Earl of Dunmore, it was originally called the Tarbert Hotel. At the time, he owned the North Harris Estate and built the hotel as a “sporting retreat” for anglers. After the estate changed hands several times, William Cameron took over the lease of the hotel in 1903 and changed the name to the Harris Hotel. The Cameron family bought the hotel outright in 1948, and the third and fourth generations are now running the business.
