YES! We are delighted to offer a special hand-loom weaving course with Louise Oppenheimer in Scotland, designed for you. The stunning location of Argyll in the West Highlands of Scotland sets the scene for our creative work. Our home for 3 nights is Melfort Village’s luxury self-catering cottages, with swimming pool sauna and hot tub, restaurant, and oh so much more.
The Artist and the course
Louise is an award winning, highly experienced, very congenial and warm person – just right for developing your weaving art, and just right for trying something new. In her words, ‘ the idea for the two days is to enjoy a short, relaxing and convivial, creative journey in texture and colour.’
Her ability to express the deep beauty of this part of Scotland is many things. It is inspiring, infectious, and very moving. Walking into her studio is like walking into a rainbow. Read an interview with Louise here.
The location ~ why November, you may ask
We will be located in the heart of Scotland’s West Highland area of Argyll, at Melfort Village, just south of Oban.
The angle of the early winter sun brings out the colours, and contours of the mountains, trees, lochs, and nearby are the ancient standing stones in Kilmartin Glen. In November, the days begin with stunning sunrises and end with glorious sunsets. All of which may find their way into our art work.
From the 14th century, Melfort was under Clan Campbell control. In the early 1800s Melfort Village was built as a gunpowder factory. Most of the holiday cottages’ names relate to their previous use in gunpowder production or the farming of Melfort Estate. Rebuilt in the 1980s as luxury holiday self-catering cottages with swimming pool, sauna and hot tub, restaurant, games room, the village is surrounded by now peaceful woodland and coastal walks. Find more at Melfort Village.
Wild at Art course prices include excellent accommodation, lunches on Monday & Tuesday, breakfasts, welcome and farewell dinners, tea & coffee breaks, studio visit, plus lots of inspiration. And most importantly, art tutoring with Louise Oppenheimer. She’ll have all the supplies we need.
Sunday 12 November 2017
Arrive in your own time, check in at Melfort Village reservations, and settle into our self-catering cottage.
4pm – We visit Louise’s studio to see her range of artistic expression and to be inspired. Welcome dinner at Shower of Herring.
Monday & Tuesday 13 & 14 November
Ready to weave with Louise? We start with an introduction to equipment, supplies and methods. Then it is time to sketch some of our ideas.
Use the colours and contours of stunning Argyll – Kilmartin Glen, walks around Melfort and Melfort Loch, and any of your favourite scenes. Bring photos and sketches with you for further inspiration.
As you settle in to the rhythm of hand loom weaving, your work begins to emerge from your creative choices. Maybe not exactly as you expected, but this is the nature of the creative process.
Depending on skill levels, we should each be able to make two small woven tapestries.
Tea and coffee breaks and lunches give us a chance to relax, share our art work and questions, ready for the next stage in our design.
Farewell dinner on Tuesday evening.
Wednesday 14 November
After breakfast we say good-bye. You take with you art inspired by Scotland ~ made by you, and leave behind some good friends made in the process of creating. You may want to extend your stay in Scotland and we will be happy to assist you with suggestions.
