Starting in Edinburgh, we visit the Ancient People’s jewelry at the Museum of Scotland. Then, on our way to the Scottish Borders, we stop at the Rosslyn Chapel, its world famous stone carvings made famous by Dan Brown in the Da Vinci Code. This Wild at Art vacation combines a most inspiring craft course with accommodation at the famous 5-star Stobo Castle hotel and spa in the Scottish Borders, where you can indulge in luxurious surroundings after days filled with creative work.
The artists and workshop
Together with award winning silversmith Adrian Hope, the exceptional jeweler Linda Lewin runs this Wild at Art course at their well equipped workshop. You learn specific techniques and choose your materials: silver, gold, copper.
‘In our experience, professionals to novices happily work together. Our aim is for every student to take home a finished piece of work as well as an informative experience that will help them continue their own work in the future’. This is a unique opportunity for you to develop your creative instincts and design, with their guidance and encouragement. And make unique pieces inspired by your surroundings.
You will learn a number of specialist techniques including raising, granulation, stone setting, soldering for silversmiths, simple casting and basic bench work. You choose to work in copper, silver or gold~ or maybe a combination.
Materials will be charged at cost at the time of purchase. Tools are supplied, but those who have their own hand tools are very welcome to bring them. This Wild at Art vacation course is limited to 6 participants to ensure you receive a high level of personal attention from the course tutors.
This 3-day craft course takes place in the Scottish Borders near Peebles. Tucked away in a traditional stone building, this fully equipped jewelry and silversmithing studio is the perfect place to shed distractions and let your creative spirit shine.
What else to do? If you are travelling with a friend, partner or family member who wants to do their own thing, they have many nearby choices: fishing on the Tweed River, golf, walking and mountain biking, exploring castles and the literary heritage (think Sir Walter Scott and John Buchan).
Accommodation – Ten Hill Place and Stobo Health Spa
Your accommodation for the first night is the Ten Hill Place in Edinburgh, a modern 4-star hotel, which is set in a quiet Georgian square and yet very central – only a few minutes’ walk from the famous Royal Mile. Ten Hill Place is part of the 500-year-old Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Profits from the hotel go to support surgical training world-wide.
Stobo Castle is set deep within the Scottish Borders countryside surrounded by forests, a tranquil lake and Japanese Water Garden. In the evening you may unwind after your creative work and enjoy the luxury of the spa that boasts Scotland’s only 25m Ozone Pool, Hydrospa, Serailbad Mud Room, state-of-the-art gymnasium, outdoor, torch-lit hot tubs and 40 treatment rooms. Stobo chefs create dishes sourced from only the finest Scottish produce that are not only delicious but promote healthy eating whilst satisfying even the heartiest appetite.
Your vacation itinerary
Day 1 Sunday
Your vacation starts in Edinburgh and you arrive at the 4-star Ten Hill Place Hotel, in your own time. Getting into the city from the airport is quick and easy and we’ll provide you with all of the information you need. We gather in the evening for welcome champagne and dinner in the hotel.
Day 2 Monday
After breakfast we visit the nearby National Museum of Scotland to get up close and feel the power of ancient jewellery and metalwork on display in the Ancient Peoples exhibit. Then by bus, on to Rosslyn Chapel made famous recently by Dan Brown’s DaVinci code, and famous for centuries because of its exquisite stone carvings.
We head into the Scottish Borders, surrounded by the moulded mountains that fold into fields and valleys – all very green. Lunch is at Whitmuir the Organic Restaurant where all the food and drink is organic and much of it is grown on their farm. Freshly prepared home cooking and baking served with a bit of style. Arriving late afternoon at Stobo, we settle in, then meet for our welcome reception and dinner.
Day 3, 4 & 5 Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
After breakfast, we travel a short way to The Workshop and Linda & Adrian’s studio to indulge in our creative work all day. Lunch is on site. Late afternoon, we return to Stobo,where you can indulge in luxury surroundings. Go for a swim or sauna, or book one of the treatments on offer. After dinner, we may want to head for Scottish live music in one of the nearby towns.
Day 6 Friday
After lunch we say good-bye. You take with you masterpieces inspired by Scotland and made by you! And you leave behind some good friends made in the process of creating art. You may wish to extend your stay in Scotland as Edinburgh festivals will be in full swing and we will be happy to assist you with suggestions.
We organise transport back to Edinburgh. If you need to catch a very early flight we can arrange early transport to the airport for an additional charge.
Inclusions and further notes
The package includes: 3 days of workshop tuition, visit to Roslyn Chapel, Wild at Art A4 sketchbook, 4 nights in 5-star hotel accommodation, 1 night in 4-star hotel accommodation, all meals – 5 full Scottish breakfasts, 5 lunches, 5 dinners; full use of spa facilities at Stobo, welcome champagne reception on arrival nights at Ten Hill Place, transport from Edinburgh to Stobo, transport between art course studio and hotel on workshop days, transport back to Edinburgh on departure day.
The itinerary is based on careful selection of suppliers and is accurate at the time of publication, but should it be necessary, Wild at Art reserves the right to make changes. Flights and airport transfers are not included. Workshop materials will be charged at cost price at the end of the course. Spa treatments can be booked separately in advance or on-site.
